Celebrating the Benefits of Apprenticeships

To celebrate Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2018, we catch up with Kyle MacDonald, our apprentice working towards a SVQ Level 3 in Electrical Engineering at the OEG Offshore Aberdeen base.

With his four-year work-based learning almost at an end, Kyle explains the variety of electrical installations and the support of his colleagues during his #apprenticeship has provided him with a solid range of skills to develop his career.

Kyle says, “The on-site experience has been a great way of improving my practical skills and knowledge of installation, maintenance and repair of electrical systems. From reading detailed electrical diagrams and knowing regulatory code to carrying out maintenance of Ex equipment in offshore workshops and A60 cabins for clients, it’s really helped my understanding.  Last week I was involved in electrical upgrades of units and this week I’m part of a team installing the electrical system in a new build A60 Variable Frequency Drive (ATEX Cat 3) module.

“I’ve been given a great opportunity to carry out an apprenticeship at OEG Offshore and I appreciate colleagues’ support during my learning as well as providing a positive work environment during my apprenticeship.

I meet with my tutor from Tullos Training every 3 months and we go through the work logs I’ve written, in preparation for my final assessment.  All going well in August I’ll receive my SVQ certificate in Electrical Engineering.”
